2008 Altanuta Pinot Grigio Valdidge Italy

Description

Pleasant lemon, lime and mineral character. Medium-bodied, with an almost salty mineral finish. Very refreshing

From high altitude vineyards on the rugged slopes of northern Italy's Alto Adige region, Altanuta is a crisp and tantalizing Pinot Grigio. Subtle citrus notes make this white delectable on it's own or with lighter fare.

Although Pinot Grigio is a relatively new wine for most American consumers, ALTANUTA is no newcomer to the grape.  The Josef Brigl estate where ALTANUTA is crafted has grown and vinified wine since 1309 - over 300 years before the pilgrims landed at Plymouth ?Rock!  Through experience comes knowledge.  Having almost 700 years of experience means that the winemakers of ALTANUTA know how to best combine the elements of land, air, weather, and winemaking to make a synergistic wine.

ALTANUTA is made in the Alto Adige region of Italy.  Situated in the Northeast corner close to the Austrian boarder the grapes are grown on the rugged slopes of high altitude vineyards which arose from seismic activity long before our time.  The combination of high altitude, composition of the soil, close exposure to the sun all contribute to the character of ALTANUTA.  The result is a Pinot Grigio that is light, crisp, and refreshing as a mountain breeze.  The name ALTANUTA stems from the combination of the Italian word for high ("alto") and estate ("tenuta").  The wine is bottled in slightly tinted glass to protect from sun and light and ensure that ALTANUTA tastes as fresh as the day it was bottled.

Made by the estate of Josef Brigl, this brisk and refreshing white owes much of its character to its heritage (wine was made here since 1309!) as well as to its high altitude vineyards in the Alto Adige. In fact the name of the brand comes from a combination of 'high' (alto in Italian) and 'estate' (tenuta). Fermented and aged in stainless steel only, aromas are floral and citrusy paving the way for a palate impression of green apple, pear and a sprightly and balanced lemony acidity. Pears well with fish and other seafood (including sushi), it is also perfect by itself as a light aperitif.
